The Castel Santââ¬â¢Angelo was built as a mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian and was the fortress that guarded the popes with a direct corridor from the Vatican City. It is crowned by a statue of the Archangel Michael with his sword. The lower floors are prison cells and a military barracks the upper floors are beautifully decorated
